What's the inspiration behind your new single "Name"?
I think a lot of times we as a people long to please, so much so that we forget about our own needs and what we need to do in order to make ourselves happy. "Name" is all about reclaiming who you really are, and reaching the point in your life when you can be 100% unapologetic for every aspect of yourself. It is an anthem to those who are ready to label themselves without any others' input or dependence.
Who in the music industry - past and present - are your greatest influences?
John Mayer is a huge influence. I grew up listening to him, and really learned a lot through how he writes and approaches music. Bon Iver is someone I also look up to for his musical endeavors and how he's a true example of how music can alter and change into a more elctronic field over time while still holding just as much meaning as an acoustic style. I really appreciate different 80s bands for their use of synths, like Depeche Mode and Tears for Fears. Other current influences that I really admire for their musicality would artists such as Sigrid and Charlie Puth. I truly think these two have created styles inside larger genres that are uniquely them and it's really inspiring.
Was there a pivotal moment in your life when you first realized you wanted to pursue music professionally?
My Freshman year of college I was recovering from a vocal polyp surgery. I was told by doctors that there was a possibility I would never sing like I used to again, but by my second semester I had gained my voice back at such an amazing speed and had trained so hard I realized I was well enough to switch my focus to my true passion, music. It was an incredible feeling, the moment I realized something that I loved so much could end up being the one thing I could do for the rest of my life. Since then I have worked hard in schooling to graduate an entire year early in order to place my complete focus on music, and spend every spare moment writing and learning all I can about production.
What's the coolest place you've ever performed?
The coolest place I have ever performed was at the Lyric Theatre in Blacksburg. It only seats about 450 people, but the people that fill the seats are always lively and full of energy. It was also the place I realized after performing I could do music professionally, so it will always have a special place in my heart.
If you could work with any artist dead or alive, who would it be?
I would absolutely love to work with John Mayer. To sit down and spend countless hours just writing and collaborating with him would be an absolute dream. He's so incredibly creative and I'd be so lucky as to experience a part of that.
